Note:

Alexander Edie Wagstaff was born March 13, 1833 in Cadiz, Ohio. After the death of his first wife in 1859, he married Jane C. "Jennie" Martin in 1861. When the Civil War broke out, he joined the 103rd Illinois Infantry Regiment. He went to California in 1869 and settled in Yolo County, where he published the Yolo Mail. He later moved to Stanislaus County, where he purchased the Modesto Herald. He ran an unsuccessful campaign in 1884 as the Republican candidate for the California State Senate. He compiled and edited the biography, "Life of David S. Terry" (1892), among other books. He also worked as an assistant to Hubert Howe Bancroft in the preparation of his "History of California." Wagstaff died on October 22, 1916 in Los Angeles, California at age 83.
